Is our challenge finally over? We are not yet ready to declare a victory, but it appears that the our Alliance successfully influenced the Memorial Park Master Plan. In the Quality of Life Committee meeting on Tuesday, August 10 there was a motion to forward the revised Master Plan to City Council, but this time without the recommendation to remove the sports amenities! This has taken approximately 16-months, but we are grateful to those who have recognized that the vast majority of Houstonians enjoy the sports amenities the park offers, which ultimately led to the revision of the Memorial Park Master Plan. We are also very thankful to the thousands of you who expressed your opinions and signed the petition. Most importantly, the Citizens Alliance recognizes several of the City Council Members who have acted on your behalf to assure that negative changes were permitted. The final steps are near. The plan will be presented to City Council for vote by those who have championed the plan. Our Alliance will be present to assure that Council understands that our acceptance is only based upon the stipulation that all existing sports amenities are preserved, including the associated attributes (parking, proximity, lighting, schedules, attention, etc). The Alliance is in favor of positive change. We hope that the new Plan will result in only positive benefits and no longer take away from the people. There is still time for one more phone call, fax, or e-mail to your Councilmember to remind them to only vote in favor if the plan recommends the preservation of the existing amenities.

Fast Facts Memorial Park has over 1500 acres. Softball, baseball, volley ball, tennis, plus the other sports use 35 acres. The golf course uses hundreds of acres. The Master Plan thinks that removing the ball sports is conservation. Why aren't they removing the private area used by the polo practice field that should not be there according to the parameters of the Hogg grant. If the Plan is really to address "conservation" then what are they doing to address the fertilizers and weed control chemicals used in those areas? How much reaches the water tables? Oh yeah, the Plan ignores conservation questions, of course... |
